The Institute

Dr. Ingo H. Leubner

The Rochester Institute for Fundamental Research was founded in 2001 by Dr. Ingo H. Leubner, Dr. rer. nat., to provide retired and laid-off scientist a formalized environment for continuing to pursue their scientific interests.

Lay-offs and forced early retirements release many active and experienced scientists who are eager to continue scientific investigations into retirement. In the Rochester Region, tens of thousands of highly educated employees were separated from Eastman Kodak and Xerox, and many others from less known industries and from academic institutions. New employment is unavailable or not an option for many of these former employees. Many have valuable interests and ideas in science and research which will eventually be lost for the economy and the future of the United States of America.

The Rochester Institute for Fundamental Research (RiffR) is intended as a vehicle to gather those who are interested in science and research and to encourage them to pursue their ideas. The Institute is especially interested in encouraging publications and to mentor upcoming young scientists. In the future, it is envisioned to obtain facilities where retired scientists may perform experimental studies.

Dr. Leubner founded Crystallization Consulting in 1998, after a career in photographic science at Eastman Kodak Company. Crystallization Consulting is a consulting firm providing advanced guidance for the precision control of crystallizations in science, research, product development and manufacturing. The success is based on a new theory of crystal nucleation which quantitatively relates operating variables to crystal formation and size. The key operating variables modeled are reactant addition rate, solubility, temperature, and two kinds of addenda, ripening agents (macro-sizing) and restrainers (nano-sizing), time of reactant addition, mixing/stirring, etc. Batch and continuous crystallizations are modeled by a unified model.

The success of this enterprise encouraged him to found the Institute. Information about Dr. Leubner's crystallization and other expertise can be found at www.CrystallizationConsulting.com. Information about joining the Institute is available from Dr. Leubner.
